After you eat, your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which then enters the bloodstream. From there, glucose is transported to your cells to be used for energy.

To manage this process, your pancreas produces insulin—a hormone that helps glucose enter your cells. Think of insulin as a key that unlocks each cell, allowing the glucose to enter. It also plays a crucial role in maintaining balanced blood sugar levels.

What Are Blood Sugar Spikes?

A blood sugar spike happens when your glucose levels rise too high or too quickly—usually after eating foods high in refined sugars and simple carbohydrates (like sugary desserts, candy, soda, or white bread).

Refined sugars and simple carbs are digested very quickly by the body, which leads to a rapid release of glucose into the bloodstream—faster than the body can efficiently manage, resulting in a spike.

Avoid Sugary Drinks

Sugary drinks like soda, sweetened teas, and fruit juices can increase blood sugar levels rapidly because they contain simple carbohydrates (sugar) without accompanying fiber, fat, or protein. This means they will absorb into the bloodstream very quickly after drinking. Try swapping sugary drinks for water, unsweetened teas, sparkling water, or water infused with different fruits.

Learn How to Snack

If you find yourself hungry in-between meals or have to wait awhile before your next meal, go ahead and reach for that snack. Try to avoid heavily processed foods that are high in sugar and refined carbs—like candy and chips—and instead choose something that contains fiber, healthy fat, and protein. Or you can simply add those things to what you have. This can look like having a handful of nuts with your carby snack, adding some nut butter, or having some Greek yogurt with berries on the side.

Get Active

Taking a walk after a meal can help your body regulate blood sugar levels more effectively. It encourages your muscles to use glucose for energy, which can prevent blood sugar spikes and help maintain steady energy levels, especially after a carb-heavy meal.
